Institute of Psychosomatic Dermatosis,Mumbai came into existence in 1982. It was the brainchild of the Director Dr Ram Malkani and the Research Associate Dr Vijay Kumar Thakur.

The need for creating this service, was felt, because it was seen and now it is very well established, accepted that 40 to 50% of dermatoses in clinical practise have a psychological etiology or contributing factors in worsening the dermatosis or making it recalcitrant. Illness in the community is a reflection of emotional turmoil in the individuals affected.

Institue of Psychosomatic Dermatolgy was in operation from 9am to 9pm Patients with all dermatosis, were subjected
to a detailed history, interview by Dr Vijay Kumar Thakur and Dr Ram Malkani Then they underwent psycholgical testing by an experienced Psychologist, which included,Roscharc`s,Hamilton anxiety scale and GHQ.

After the reports were handed over to both the therapists, counselling was done along with the standard prescription for the dermatosis. It was felt and concluded that the results were certainly better, improvement long lasting and patient now having an insight into his mental world.

This improved his coping mechanisms to day to day stressors. This final valid inference has been confirmed and documented by a thesis on Psycholgical profile of common dermatosis carried out at the Jaslok hospital & Research centre from 2008 to 2009.
